On the 9th of February, the Polygon network called for donations to support victims of the Turkey earthquake. The network encouraged its community members to use MATIC tokens for relief contributions. A report from Reuters reveals that more than 14,000 have died, with 63,000 displaced so far. Polygon’s community has the goal of extending financial relief to the survivors.

According to the Twitter account “TurkeyReliefDAO”, all MATIC donations would go to the official İhtiyaç Haritası account. İhtiyaç Haritası is a social platform cooperative from Turkey. The organization connects victims of disasters with individuals and groups willing to lend a helping hand.

To foster transparency, all donations to the Matic account provided can be viewed on-chain. Further, transfers to and from the wallet address provided can be tracked on PolygonScan.

On-chain data reveals that the wallet address provided has received over $120 worth of MATIC at the time of writing. The wallet address (MATIC 0xbe4CdE5eeEeD1f0A97a9457f6eF5b71EAE108652) currently has seven transactions on its record.

Notably, the Polygon network only called for donations via its Twitter account two hours ago. With its 1.8 million followers, spectators can expect the community members to raise a tangible sum in the next few days.

Centralized Exchanges also Donate to Earthquake Victims

With thousands of lives lost in the Turkey and Syria disaster, multiple organizations have been on their feet to provide aid to victims. The crypto community has not kept silent too during this calamitous period.

About two days ago, Changpeng Zhao, famously known as CZ, informed his followers that Binance would be airdropping tokens to its users in Turkey. The airdrop, cumulatively worth $5 million in BNB, was distributed to users in the affected regions. Each user got about $100 worth of BNB as a relief fund. CZ also noted that Binance would work hard in the coming days to provide more support to the survivors.

Similarly, Gate.io exchange launched an Earthquake donation NFT to support Turkish citizens. The Earthquake donation NFT is currently on sale. Further, Gate.io assured its community members that all proceeds from the sales would be donated to individuals in the affected region. Bitfinex, Bitmex, Huobi, and Bybit have also supported natural disaster survivors with varying sums.

So far, the response of various entities in the crypto ecosystem to the tragedy has been impressive. Although the cryptocurrency market is not absolutely favorable for decentralized protocols and CEXs currently, millions of dollars have been given up for good. This proves that cryptocurrencies and NFTs can play a significant role in the world of finance.
